INTERVIEW JEROEN'S BESPOKE BIG FIVE
I had the pleasure of visiting Mafia Island, one of Tanzania’s best-kept secrets. With powdery white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life, it’s a paradise for nature lovers and anyone seeking tranquillity.
The island and its surrounding waters form part of a protected marine park, where you can dive or snorkel alongside majestic whale sharks. Quieter and more exclusive than Zanzibar, Mafia Island is also a popular choice for honeymooners craving a romantic, intimate tropical escape. From Dar es Salaam, six daily flights take just 30 minutes, with tickets starting at around 160 USD one way.
There, I met Jeroen Metselaar, Project Developer of Basecamp Eco-Resorts Africa, and asked him how it all began.
He shared that four years ago, newly single, he was looking for a private getaway in Africa and bought a plot, sight unseen.
Mafia Island, which translates to “place of health,” has historically drawn traders and businessmen seeking rest and rejuvenation.
“At the time, the resort was completely run down; the rooms were essentially ruins.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND LOCAL ENGAGEMENT ARE CENTRAL TO THE PROJECT.
Jeroen works solely with regional products, local suppliers, and local staff. Rachel, at the front office, explains: “Our teams each wear colored Basecamp polos with punchlines on the back. Mine says, ‘Come as a guest, leave as a friend.’ Everyone works together like clockwork, and the hospitality is top-notch.” Abdallah, the Duty Manager, adds,
“We don’t just sell excursions, we accompany our guests ourselves to ensure they have the best experience possible.”
MAFIA ISLAND HAS ITS OWN BESPOKE BIG FIVE.
Nestled on the bay of one of the world’s top ten diving and snorkeling spots, the resort is only a ten-minute boat ride to the reef. Jeroen proudly lists their own Big Five:
